Welcome to NAMM 2014! Winter NAMM 2014 got under way this morning and it was a long wait for registration—the skies are sunny and the place is packed! Universal Audio kicked things off with the introduction of the Apollo Twin interface, a sleek 2x6 Thunderbolt audio interface for Mac, combining the same high-quality 24/192 kHz audio conversion with onboard Realtime UAD SOLO or DUO Processing. With the Apollo Twin, UA also introduced Unison, an audio processing breakthrough that enables the popular Apollo Audio Interfaces' onboard mic preamps to sound and behave like the world's most sought-after tube and solid-state preamps, giving users continuous, realtime, bi-directional control and interplay between Apollo's physical hardware and UAD software mic preamp models. Then we jumped over to the PMI booth and saw the prototype for a new 8-bus console, starting at 16 channels (the unit we saw had 24, which would price it around $24k). The split inline design features multiple mic/line inputs, transformer options and EQ on every channel, with independent mic/line gain control. The company Trident has been very active of late, with the 500 Series A Range module coming out, a new line of microphones, speakers and the Tonelux V Series Mix Rack, a preconfigured 500 rack with optimized Tonelux modules, an EQ and compressor to make it a 16-channel summing mixer. Lynx, meanwhile, has true Thunderbolt connectivity on display, chaining six 32-channel Auroras for 192 channels on a single cable. At any time the units are hot-swappable with each other and Hilo, meaning, say, that you could use Aurora for tracking and Hilo for mixing, or any combination. One more cool thing? They had a brand new 12-core Mac tower in the middle of it all. Cylindrical, short and gray, it is pretty damn cool-looking. The big news over at Radial Engineering the the new Space Heater, an 8-channel tube summing mixer in send/receive stereo pairs. It is packed and solid, yet fits the same depth profile of the Workhorse 500 Series rack. It is expected out late-spring/early summer. Finally, over at Focusrite, there will be more RedNet units coming in the future, but right now the company is focused on applications of the Dante-connected system, including RedNet 6n (the MADI box) installs at 20th Century Fox, Dolby Labs and Dennis Sands studio to be used in conjunction with the BSS Soundweb in driving Dolby Atmos film productions. Also, systems engineer has been using RedNet units driving the racks in The Killers' current tour. Check out some hot new products announced at the show today, below. There will be more to come tomorrow! |
